It took crews from Ossett, Wakefield and Dewsbury more than seven hours to deal with the flames, having been called to the scene at the recycling depot on the Quarry Hill Industrial Estate at around 4.50pm.

Smoke was left billowing out across the area and could be seen from as far away as Crigglestone.

Four large pumps arrived at the scene to bring the fire under control but relief crews had to be mobilised later as the fire raged until after midnight. It is believed that staff at the plant were carrying out the routine burning of pallets and plastic objects when the fire quickly got out of control.

Watch Commander Steven Mitchell, from Ossett Fire Station said the fire was “immense”.

“The plant was burning pallets but the fire quickly got out of control,” he said.

“Extra fire crews were mobilised as we were short of the water we needed to deal with the blaze. The fire was extinguished around midnight.”
