West Yorkshire fire crews still dealing with barn fire

Fire crews from across West Yorkshire have remained at the scene of a barn fire at Doncaster Road, Crofton, since the early hours of yesterday morning.

Crews from Wakefield, Ossett, Dewsbury, Cleckheaton, Pontefract and Hunslet have all been called in to deal with the blaze.

Watch commander Mike Ferries, of Wakefield Fire Station, said: “The barn was on fire and there was a danger of it spreading to further stacks and adjacent explosion risks.

“We managed to stop it spreading to three other hay stacks. The fire is now surrounded and contained and is being allowed to burn out.”

A fire service spokesman said: “Two very large stacks of hay remain alight and are burning out under controlled supervision from firefighters.

“One of the stacks was within the barn, which has collapsed due to the fire. “The other is in the open air.

“No people or animals have been hurt in this incident and no surrounding properties are at risk.

“This is likely to be a protracted incident which will require 24-hour attendance from firefighters over the weekend and possibly longer.”

An investigation into the cause of the fire is ongoing and motorists have been advised to find alternative routes as Doncaster Road is closed.
