Talented poets will be performing at a new spoken word night that is launching in the city centre.

A Firm of Poets is hosting the monthly Unity Words event in partnership with Unity Works and Word Life.

Matt Abbott, co-founder of A Firm of Poets, a collective of writers and spoken word artists, said: “We talked about poetry and spoken word being accessible, engaging and entertaining. That’s what we set out to do with the Firm, and, in Unity Words, we have an opportunity to create the strongest spoken word night in the north. We’ll be bringing the very best spoken word acts in the country to Wakefield, and taking another step to transform the way in which people engage with and enjoy the art form.”

The first event - in Unity Works cafe bar on February 24 - will be hosted by A Firm of Poets co-founder Ralph Dartford and will feature Wigan poet Louise Fazackerley, Rob Reed and DJ Captain Black. The night will then take place on the last Wednesday of every month to concide with the city’s Artwalk event. Entry will be free with audience members encouraged to pay what they feel when leaving.

Dean Freeman, Unity Works programmer, said: “Since Unity Works opened, we’ve had such a huge range of events and shows, but the ones we worked on with A Firm Of Poets were easily amongst the most innovative, engaging and fun of them all.”
