Firefighters from South Kirkby, Featherstone and Adwick-le-Street in Doncaster were called to Field Lane, South Elmsall, at around 11.50pm on Monday.

It took them more than five hours to extinguish the blaze and smoke could be seen as far as five miles away.

Three large pumps were used to help bring the fire under control.

Fire crews also closed Field Lane for five hours while dealing with the blaze.

Watch Commander Darren Hague, from South Kirkby Fire Station, said the fire was started deliberately.

He said: “When we arrived the fire was huge. They had set a couple of hundred tractor tyres on fire in the disused quarry.

“We had something like this a few years ago but I don’t understand why anyone would to set them alight.”

Mr Hague said they had received reports of someone leaving the area just after the fire began.

West Yorkshire Police are now investigating the incident.
