Mr Cooper, of Balne Lane, said: “I had bought the quad bike as a Christmas present and because Kian was so excited we decided to take it out.

“He got on the bike with me then we got around half way around the field when he said his foot hurt.

“I took his shoe off and his foot was covered in blood. We called the ambulance straight away.”

Kian was treated at the scene by paramedics and was later taken to Pinderfields Hospital.

Mr Cooper, 23, said: “He is doing okay and he is lively.

“The doctors said it is not life threatening and he will still be able to walk.

“They will know at the end of the week how bad his injuries are.”

Con Dave Laybourne, of the Eastern Area Safer Roads and Neighbourhoods Support Team, said: “I would appeal to anyone who was in the area on Tuesday afternoon and saw the quad bike and riders before the incident.

“We would also like to speak to anyone who witnessed the incident itself to come forward. Enquiries are ongoing.”
