UPDATED: Pensioner dies in Hemsworth collision

A pensioner has died following a serious road traffic collision involving two cars on Hemsworth Road.

A dark blue Ford Focus, travelling towards Hemsworth, was in collision with a dark blue Toyota Corolla travelling in the opposite direction at 11.45am yesterday (Wednesday).

The 79-year-old man, who was driving the Corolla, was pronounced dead at the scene. His passenger, a 77-year-old female, suffered fractured ribs.

The 47-year-old male driver of the Focus suffered serious internal injuries and a 44-year-old male rear seat passenger sustained serious leg and internal injuries.

The three injured people were taken to Leeds General Infirmary.

All three emergency services attended the incident and the road was closed for several hours.

Police are appealing for anyone who saw the incident to come forward. Anyone with information should call the major collision and enquiry team on 101.
