The move is part of a shake-up of services will which also see Dewsbury’s A&E department downgraded to an urgent care centre treating minor ailments from September.

Critically-ill and injured patients will be taken to a beefed-up A&E at Pinderfields.

The Wakefield hospital will also become the trust’s only consultant-led maternity department, treating all women with complex births.

Dewsbury and Pontefract hospitals will both have birth centres led by midwives for births which do not require a consultant..

The decision to speed-up the emergency surgery move was taken by Wakefield Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG), which controls the district’s NHS budget.

A CCG report said colorectal and bariatric surgery would remain at Dewsbury until spring 2017. Dewsbury and Pontefract hospitals will both carry out more planned surgery.

The report said: “Day surgery will continue to be provided at all three hospitals and there will be rapid access to clinics, where appropriate, for patients who present at Dewsbury emergency department needing surgical assessment.”
