Veterans of Gawthorpe’s world-famous coal race will be battling it out in a special race to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the competition on Easter Monday.
Competitors will run the mile-long course from the Royal Oak pub on Owl Lane to the maypole on the village green, carrying sacks of coals on their back.
A nostalgic veterans race will mark the 50 year history of the event and will open the day of championships at noon.
This will be followed by the ladies race at 12:30pm and men’s races at 1pm and 1:30pm.
Children can also get involved in the competition by carrying small sacks of sand across a 100m course.
Winners will receive a cash prize or trophy and get their names in the event’s history books.
