Students at Pontefract’s NEW College now have access to top-of-the-range resources after a new £1.6m library opened at the site.

The new Learning Resource Centre (LRC) provides three floors of services including computers, textbooks, journals, careers advice, study support, personal care and multimedia resources.

It is part of a revamp across the campus which also include plans for a new performing arts academy.

Pauline Hagen, principal, said: “I compare this new learning resource centre to a beating heart. It is pumping the lifeblood of learning to different parts of the college.

“The new LRC reflects our passionate commitment to learning and offers students all of the facilities they need to study independently.”

The LRC was officially opened by Pontefract and Castleford MP Yvette Cooper on Friday.

Ms Cooper said: “What’s brilliant for me is knowing how hard people have worked to get this place up and running.

“Sometimes it has been two steps forward and one step back along the way but what is a huge tribute to NEW College is the determination and the vision that the staff have had.”

Tom Cairns, 17, a second year student at the college, said the facility offered extra capacity for youngsters at the college.

He said: “Compared to the previous library it is a lot bigger and a better environment to learn.

“I am studying a BTEC in ICT and it offers me all of the software and facilities I need to do work out of class.”
