VIDEO: Pensioner, 85, drives down M1 motorway on mobility scooter

The unnamed 85-year-old was spotted edging down the M1 in South Yorkshire by lorry driver Steve Saxon.

Motorists watched with horror as the man was pulled over by police on the northbound carriageway between junctions 31 and 32, near Sheffield.

A passenger in Mr Saxon’s vehicle managed to film the scene as they passed by in the midday traffic.

Mr Saxon said: “I don’t know what he was thinking or where he thought he was going but it’s the most bizarre thing I’ve seen in almost 20 years driving lorries.

“At first we were gobsmacked but then we started laughing. It’s not funny but we couldn’t help but laugh.

“The traffic did slow down a bit. But I think most people would if they saw that. He looked completely oblivious to what was going on.”

The stretch of motorway was restricted to a 50mph limit due to roadworks at the time.

Mr Saxon, who runs S E Saxon Transport in South Elmsall, said the pensioner appeared to have joined the M1 at junction 31 and was turned around by a police officer en route.

A spokesperson for South Yorkshire Police said the force received a number of calls about the pensioner’s trip down the hard shoulder, adding that his family had since been contacted.
