Wakefield to be lit up for Christmas tonight

Wakefield will be transformed into a winter wonderland this weekend as Christmas lights are switched on across the city.

The festivities start with the opening of an ice rink on the Cathedral precinct today.

It will be open every day until Christmas Eve between 11am and 5pm each day and until 4pm on Sundays.

Sessions will last for 30 minutes and cost £2.

The city will also be lit up tonight with the switching on of the Christmas lights at 6pm.

The Christmas build-up also sees the return of the popular Wakefield Christmas market, which will run on three consecutive weekends starting today.

It will also open on Friday, November 28 to Sunday, November 30 and from Friday, December 5 until Sunday, December 7.

The market will be open from 10am until 5pm each day and until 4pm on Sundays.

Coun Les Shaw, cabinet member for culture, leisure and sport, said: “We are looking forward to building on the success of the Christmas celebrations from last year, with many different activities taking place.”

Trinity Walk shopping centre will also join in the festivities on Saturday with their own switch-on event.

Elsa from Disney film Frozen will be joined by Santa at the event from 1pm until 5pm.
