Wakefield to benefit from £1bn City deal

Wakefield will get share of the £1bn City deal announced by the government today.

The money will be given to the Leeds City Region and they must promise to invest it in the region to create jobs, improve the transport networks and stimulate economic growth.

Wakefield Council, in partnership with the Leeds City Region has agreed to the deal which will transfer national powers and funding to the region.

Coun Peter Box, Leader of Wakefield Council and chairman of the Leeds City Region Partnership said: “This is a major first step forwards in securing a better economic future for Wakefield.”

Newcastle, Birmingham, Bristol, Nottingham and Sheffield are other cities to agree deals.

Deals have already been agreed with Liverpool and Manchester already agreed.
