Wakefield Council to announce plans for future of children’s centres

Wakefield Council is set to reveal its final proposals for the centres after carrying out a public consultation on how to cut costs and provide more support for vulnerable children.

Some centres could close as part of a shake-up which sparked protests from families over the summer.

In July, the council announced plans to centralise district’s 23 children’s centres into six main hubs and three “linked sites”, offering extra support in deprived areas.

The council is facing £185m in budget cuts over the next five years, and must slash £2.5m from its spending on children’s centres.

A final proposal for the future of the centres will be considered by Wakefield Council’s cabinet next week.
