Wakefield Council joins tributes to victims of Paris attacks

Flags at Wakefield Town Hall and County Hall are flying at half-mast as a mark of respect for the 132 people who were killed in a series of attacks across the French capital on Friday night.

Wakefield Council leader Peter Box said: “On behalf of the people of Wakefield I offer our sincere condolences to those affected by the horrific attacks.

“All our flags are being flown at half-mast today as a mark of respect for the people who lost their lives and we will hold another minute’s silence at Full Council on Wednesday to enable Wakefield Council’s elected members and colleagues to express their sympathy and solidarity.

“Wakefield stands united with the people of Paris and France in determination to defeat terrorism.”

Joanne Roney, chief executive of Wakefield Council, said: “Colleagues across the council observed the Europe wide tribute as we came together at 11am this morning to show our respects. Our sympathy and support goes out to anyone affected by these acts of terrorism.”

Wakefield Cathedral will also hold a vigil tonight from 7.30pm until 8pm.

Members of the public can light a candle and say a prayer for the victims of the attacks.
