Joanne Roney, the council’s chief executive, accepted the award on behalf of the council.

She said: “I am delighted that Wakefield’s achievements have been recognised.

“We have a superb track record of leading the delivery of major developments, like The Hepworth, Trinity Walk and Merchant Gate.

“In the last financial year we secured £207m of private sector investment and created over 900 jobs as a result of inward investment activity.

“These successes would not have happened without the leadership of the council under Coun Peter Box to make economic development and regeneration a strategic priority for the Council.

“We have a clear vision for sustainable economic growth and job creation and we are determined to put Wakefield on the map as a vibrant and dynamic region.”

The ceremony was held at the Royal Armouries Museum in Leeds and brought together almost 500 of the top developers, investors, architects and advisers from across the region.
