The charity is through to the shortlist for People’s Projects, which will see five Yorkshire groups competing for a share of £150,000 in Big Lottery funding.

The five have all featured on ITV’s regional news this week, with viewers asked to vote for their favourites. The top three will receive up to £50,000.

If successful, staff at the support group would use the money for its A Brighter Future through Better Understanding for Young People with Down’s Syndrome project, which provides support and training for parents and siblings of babies and children with Down’s Syndrome, including information packs, social trips and activities. They will also provide training in Makaton, which uses signs and symbols to help people communicate, and Numicon, a multi-sensory approach to teaching maths.

Dawn Austwick, Big Lottery Fund chief executive, said: “Each year we make 13,000 awards to groups and projects that make lives and communities better. The People’s Projects put you in charge of where money will be spent where you live, so make sure that you get online to pick your winning project.”

The People’s Project scheme is run in partnership with The Big Lottery Fund, ITV and The National Lottery.

Other groups in with a chance of winning in the Yorkshire North region include Happydays Cycles, the Extending Emergency Response and Communication Techniques project, Think Like a Pony CIC and York Timebank.
