Wakefield Lit Fest gets underway

Renowned poets and authors including Roger McGough, Simon Armitage, Stuart Maconie and Will Self, will feature in the third annual Lit Fest and there will be more than 60 word related events and activities.

The 13-day festival, programmed by arts charity Beam, begins with a ‘Knowledge Emporium’ in Trinity Walk and a talk from historian Dr Jonathan Foyle.

People can visit the emporium, an old-fashioned sweet shop in a converted 1960s caravan, daily from 10am until 4pm until September 21, and can exchange knowledge, stories, recipes or facts for sweets.

A reading, based on the material, will then be given in the shopping centre at 1pm on Sunday.

Dr Foyle will deliver a talk on Henry VII and Elizabeth of York’s Marriage Bed this evening.

The talk, which is also part of Wakefield Civic Society’s 50th anniversary programme, takes place at The Orangery from 7.30pm until 9pm.
