The sleigh, which will tour the streets collecting for Rotary charities, has been made in the Love Lane prison’s workshops.

In past years the Rotary Club of Wakefield club has used a classic car but now, for the first time, the club’s Santa has a proper sleigh, complete with reindeers.

Secretary Peter Clarke said: “We are very grateful for the cooperation of the staff at HM Prison, Wakefield for arranging the sleigh and reindeer to be built for us in the workshop. They have been made to a high standard and we wish to record our thanks to everyone involved.”

Santa and his snowmen, will be knocking on doors next week wishing residents a Merry Christmas, for three nights between 6pm and 8pm. They will be on the Mountbatten estate at Sandal on Monday, on Pinders Heath on Tuesday and at Pledwick on Wednesday.

Mr Clarke added: “We’ll be using the sleigh and some of the reindeer on only three nights so we’re happy to consider hiring them out at other times.”
