Plans to close 43 ‘unprofitable’ Tesco stores will not affect any of the seven branches across the Wakefield district, the supermarket giant has revealed.

Earlier this month, the company said most of those earmarked for closure would be convenience stores, raising fears that the Express stores on Barnsley Road and Stanley Road in Wakefield, Leeds Road in Outwood, Dewsbury Road in Ossett and Fryston Road, Castleford, could close. There is also a Tesco supermarket in Pontefract town centre and a superstore in Hemsworth.

But today (Wednesday) Tesco said none of those stores were facing the chop.

Only five branches in Yorkshire - in Leeds, Doncaster, Mexborough and two in Sheffield - will be shut.

The company has also axed plans to build 49 larger stores.
