Wakefield will support 100 Syrian refugees

Wakefield will support 100 refugees fleeing Syria over the next three years.

All 21 councils in Yorkshire and the Humber have agreed to accept refugees as part of national plans to house 20,000 people from Syria. The Government will meet the cost of housing and supporting the refugees.

Coun Olivia Rowley, Wakefield Council’s cabinet member for children and young people and chair of Migration Yorkshire, said: “We are deeply concerned about the dreadful plight of Syrian refugees which we are still seeing regularly on TV and whose situation only gets worse as we move into the winter months.

“I am pleased that Migration Yorkshire is co-ordinating the number of refugees coming to our region and look forward to welcoming around a hundred refugees to the district over the next three years.

“The Council will be working with Migration Yorkshire and a report will be presented to senior councillors in the Council’s Cabinet the New Year so they can approve plans to support refugees to start new lives here in the district.”
