Featherstone WMC in Green Lane is the venue for a summer gig for young people on Saturday July 5.

Long Division Festival and Unity Works are holding the event to find new young bands to play on the all-ages stage as part of the Long Division Festival in September.

The free Featherstone gig – which starts at 4pm – will feature young local bands Wearenotdolphins and Cosmic Badger. Also playing are Wakefield’s Runaround Kids, who have toured the UK and played at Leeds Festival, and headliners The Sunbeams, from Featherstone, whose debut EP sold out on Wakefield record label Philophobia Music last month.

Dean Freeman, head programmer at Unity Works and festival director, said: “The idea is that putting young bands on a bill with more established - yet still local - bands will allow them to talk to and learn from more established bands. It’s a diverse line-up, and really shows off the talent that exists in Wakefield as a whole.”

The gigs are supported by Wakefield Council’s Creative Partners Scheme. There will also be a competition to win tickets to see Long Division headline act The Cribs at Unity Works on Friday September 12.

There will also be a gig at Hemsworth Community College on Thursday night as part of its annual Hemstock event. The event runs from 7pm to 9.30pm and entry costs £2.
