Wakefield’s youngsters wear red for children’s heart unit

Youngsters from the New Life Pre-School and Nursery, on George Street, Wakefield, (pictured) got dressed up for the national Wear Red event in aid of the Children’s Heart Surgery Fund (CHSF), which supports the Leeds Heart Unit.

And Alverthorpe St Paul’s C of E Primary School is also supporting the initiative in honour of Kyle Cockcroft, four, who was born with Transposition of the Great Arteries (TGA) and underwent major heart surgery at the LGI when he was just nine days old.

The children are looking forward to a visit from Katie Bear, the CHSF mascot, in assembly tomorrow (Friday).

Adam Cockroft, Kyle’s father, said; “We have experienced the help of the Children’s Heart Surgery Fund first hand and this is a fantastic way to give something back. The team has provided constant support and care for Kyle since he was diagnosed.”

Crigglestone Nursery School and Fitzwilliam Primary are also taking part along with a number of local businesses, including Sapa Building Systems and Bretton Centre.

Wear Red Day is on February 6 and aims to raise funds for heart charities as well as increase awareness of congenital heart disease. The CHSF is aiming to raise £50,000 towards essential ventilators for the ward.
