A DISTRAUGHT pet owner is warning residents to be “on their guard” after her cat was shot dead outside her home in Pontefract.
Zara Shelton, 29, found her cat Mikel with a “small neat hole” in his side outside the house in Scawthorpe Close on Sunday afternoon. She believes the pet was shot by an air gun.
She said: “I came outside and his eyes were wide open and he was just lying there. I knew he was dead.
“I am absolutely disgusted, whoever has done this cannot have a heart.
“I want to make people in this area aware that when they let their pets out, there is someone out there who hates cats.
“I would never forgive myself if someone else had to go through what our family has gone through.”
Miss Shelton contacted the police and the RSPCA on Monday.
She added: “The police are going around the area knocking on people’s doors to ask if anyone knows who has an air gun.
“The wound was a neat little hole underneath his armpit. It had to be done by an air gun or air rifle. My partner’s dad used to work in the police, he came over to clean the wound and he believes the hole was from an air gun pellet.”
Miss Shelton brought home Mikel and his brother, Flick, last April.
She said: “The two cats were inseparable and now Flick runs around the house looking for Mikel.
“He was one in a million and such a unique character.
“It’s heart wrenching. I have had to tell my six-year-old son the cat has gone to heaven because it would be too awful to have to tell him what really happened to Mikel.”
Anyone with information about the attack should contact the police on 0845 6060606 or the RSPCA on 03001 234999.
