Warning over flytipping at eyesore site

Flytippers have been warned to stop dumping rubbish at a former hotel site in South Elmsall.

People living near the demolished Westfield Hotel have suffered years of the eyesore site being used as a dumping ground.

Dennis Parkin-Coates, who lives on nearby Princess Avenue, said an old pram and electrical wiring from a house were among items currently dumped at the Westfield Lane site.

He said: “It was knocked down about eight years ago.

“It’s the most dirty, filthy place anywhere in this area.

“I’ve reported it to Wakefield Council and South Elmsall Town Council. People are bringing bags of rubbish and slinging them over the wall.”

The building was gutted by fire in 2006 and then targeted by vandals and flytippers.

At the time the grounds had overgrown into neighbouring gardens and there had been numerous thefts of lead, slate and piping since following the pub’s closure more than nine years previously.

There was hope that the site would be cleaned up after work was carried out to demolish the building in 2009.

But Mr Parkin-Coates, whose house backs on to the site, said it continued to be a rubbish-strewn eyesore.

He added: “It’s in a disgusting state.”

Wakefield Council confirmed that it owns the site and said it would be cleaned up.

Glynn Humphries, service for director environment and streetscene, said: “We hadn’t received any recent reports of flytipping on this site.

“We do own the site and as we have now been made aware of this, we will make sure it is cleaned by the end of the week.”
