Watch out for ‘distraction burglary’ after South Kirkby incident, Wakefield

Wakefield District Police are urging householders to check the ID of people who claim to be public officials and ask to enter their homes following an incident on Friday April 11.

Officers are now investigating the offence which took place at about 2.30pm at a home on Mill Close in South Kirkby.

It occurred after a man knocked at the front door and asked the resident, a 76-year-old woman, if he could carry out some checks.

Once inside he asked the occupant to check her taps and under the sink.

After the man had left the victim discovered a quantity of cash had been taken while she had been distracted.

The suspect arrived with another male in a silver four-door vehicle and the two were described as white, in their early 30’s, 6ft tall and of average build.

Both were also described as scruffy and wearing baseball caps. One also spoke with a local accent.

Detective Inspector Paul Harrison of Wakefield District CID, said: “We are investigating this incident and are appealing for anyone who may have seen the suspect entering or leaving the property or who has information to contact us.

“I would always remind residents to check the ID of anyone who approaches you at home and claims to be from an organisation such as a water board or a power company.

“Genuine callers will carry ID and will also be happy for you to ring their organisations to check they are who they say they are. If you are at all uncertain you are under no obligation to let anyone into your home.”
