Watchdog role for MP Mary

Wakefield MP Mary Creagh has been elected to chair the government's Environmental Audit Committee.

The committee scrutinises how the work of government departments contributes to environmental protections and sustainable development.

Ms Creagh said the committee would be looking into issues including European Union legislation, soil health and carbon emissions in the NHS.

She said: “I’m very keen that the committee is better known among the general public.”

Ms Creagh, who was elected as Wakefield MP in 2005 and has served as shadow environment secretary and shadow international development secretary, replaces Labour MP Huw Irranca-Davies to chair the committee.
