Will Wakefield get a gentleman’s club in the city centre?

Wakefield Council’s licensing committee will decide whether to give the go-ahead to a lap dancing club in the city centre next week.

Nightclub owner Kevin Spencer wants to open the Pussy Cat Lounge sexual entertainment venue above Tequila nightclub on Bank Street.

Twenty objections have been made against the club, including from Wakefield Council leader Peter Box, who said the venue was on a major route in the city, close to historic buildings like Unity Works and Theatre Royal, Wakefield.

He said: “Families leaving these premises late at night should not be subject to the atmosphere that such an establishment can create.”

Local councillors, Wakefield MP Mary Creagh and nearby businesses, including Unity Works, The Bank House Hotel and Restaurant, and Beam at The Orangery also objected.

Mr Spencer, who has five years experience running gentleman’s clubs and has owned multiple nightclubs around Westgate, has applied for a licence to open the club from 11pm until 4.30am on Thursday to Monday inclusive.

Speaking to the Express last month, he said: “Wakefield has had gentleman’s bars before and this is an ideal location in the heart of the city’s clubs and bars but down a side street with no passing trade.”

Wakefield Council’s licensing committee will decide whether to grant the venue a “sex establishment” licence at a meeting on September 9.
