Coun David Dagger, Wakefield Council’s cabinet member for transport and highways, told a meeting of full council the schemes will be introduced to improve road safety outside schools and the Bull Ring in Wakefield.

New zones will also be introduced on High Street, Gawthorpe and Storrs Hill Road, Ossett, Common Road, South Kirkby, Cow Lane in Havercroft and Ferrybridge Road in Knottingley.

Coun Dagger told the meeting: “It is anticipated that the implementation of the schemes will begin in the autumn.”

“A number of 20mph requests have been received from councillors and members of the public to introduce schemes in the district.

“Introducing 20mph schemes would save lives, prevent injuries and reduce health inequalities in the process.”

A council spokeswoman said it hoped to start work on the schemes by the end of this year or the beginning of 2015.

But Coun Les Shaw said: “Enforcement is non-existent within the 20mph zone in Airedale and the boy racers who have always been there are still there.

“If we are going to spend money and introduce these schemes then I think we need to educate people and we need the police to do some enforcement.”
