Engineers have started work on a £250,000 upgrade to ageing gas mains.
Northern Gas Networks will replace around 900m of metal gas mains in Sandal.
Work started at the junction of Barnsley Road and Standbridge Lane on Monday.
Temporary three-way traffic lights have been installed while the work is carried out.
The engineers will replace gas mains from The Star Inn to the Asda roundabout on Standbridge Lane next month.
Work will continue along Standbridge Lane in September.
And the engineers will then replace gas mains on Kingsley Avenue and Barnsley Road in October.
The work is part of £6m being invested to improve the city’s gas mains.
Northern Gas Networks construction services area manager Warren Iveson said: “We know that no one likes roadworks so please be assured that we’ll do all we can to keep disruption to a minimum.
“We would like to thank customers for their patience throughout these essential improvement works and apologise for any inconvenience caused.”
