Work starts on play park's £45k revamp

Work to refurbish a 'rundown' children's play area has got underway this week.

The Ash Grove play park, in Minsthorpe, will be given new equipment and a fresh look in a revamp costing £45,000.

Ackworth, North Elmsall and Upton councillor Martyn Ward said the current playground site had “deteriorated over a number of years” and an update was “much needed”.

He said: “We are really pleased as elected members from both wards of Upton and South Elmsall to see this project finally commence.

“In this climate of cuts and more cuts brought on by the government, we have been supported by the council’s leadership in getting this very valuable and significant investment for this project.

“We look forward to this and the next phase which will be an excellent amenity for children and youths of all ages to enjoy in our area.”

The refurbishment is the first phase of plans to revitalise the park. Phase two of the project could see the creation of a skate park for older children.

South Kirkby and South Elmsall councillor Michelle Collins said: “We have had lots of complaints about the play area and how bad it’s got.

“We hope this will mark the start of regeneration around Minsthorpe and go hand-in-hand with the new pool and leisure facilities and hopefully in the long run a new skate park with the play area.”

Sutcliffe Play Ltd is carrying out the work, which is expected to be completed within a month.

Plans for the new Minsthorpe swimming pool are expected to be unveiled this month.
