She and husband Prince William arrived at the hospital’s private Lindo Wing just before 6am.

They travelled by car without a police escort and Kensington Palace confirmed they were there at around 7.30am - it’s not known how long she was in labour before being admitted.

The Duchess is planning to have a natural birth, and a spokesman said: “things are progressing as normal.”

A top medical team led by the Queen’s former gynaecologist Marcus Setchell, who delivered the Countess of Wessex’s two children, is tending to The Duchess.

The world’s press have been camped outside St Mary’s in Paddington for days in anticipation of the birth and even the Queen has joked about the imminent arrival of the newest member of her family, saying she hoped the baby was born before she went on holiday later this week.

Earlier today, Prince Charles said he had heard ‘absolutely nothing’ on a visit to Pontefract as he waited for news on the birth of his first grandchild.

He was welcomed by farmers and staff at Dovecote Park in Stapleton as part of a two-day tour of Yorkshire.

He also visited the National Railway Museum in York and will attend a reception for Prince’s Trust supporters at Harewood House, near Leeds tonight, where Wakefield singer Ruby Macintosh will perform alongside opera star Lesley Garrett.

The Duke and his younger brother, Prince Harry, were born in the Lindo Wing.

Under new laws to succession the baby will remain third in line to the throne regardless of gender.
