A young woman has been left with blurred vision in her right eye after an unprovoked attack on New Year’s Eve.
Sophie Colligan , 21, suffered a broken cheekbone after being punched by a man on Westgate sometime between 2am and 3.30am. Her injuries have left her with blurred vision in her right eye and she may need to have surgery.
Miss Colligan, of Waterton Road, Lupset, said: “I went out and it was such a good night. Then the man started bothering me and my friends and he hit me. After it happened, inside I just wanted to cry because it hurt so bad.”
Miss Colligan had been on a night out with friends in the city centre but a man started verbally abusing the group as they waited for a taxi home.
She said: “He started provoking my friend, who told him to go away.”
The man returned a short time later and he then began to threaten Miss Colligan.
She said: “He told me to go in the alleyway and threatened to ‘finish me off’. He then started running towards me and punched me in the face.”
Miss Colligan suffered a broken cheekbone and she was referred to the surgical assessment unit at Pinderfields Hospital on Saturday.
Doctors told her she may need surgery if her blurred vision continues.
Police said a woman suffered facial injuries after being punched in the face on Westgate. Anyone who witnessed the incident should call police on 101.
