Letter - Pool proposal is ‘totally ludicrous’

I write regarding Wakefield Council and their proposal to close down the three swimming pools in this area - Pontefract, Castleford and Knottingley.

My sister-in-law and I totally disagree with this suggestion.

While the council are telling us to Keep Fit and Get Active what they are proposing is totally ludicrous.

Swimming is one of the best ways to keep fit. We have both been advised by our GPs that this would benefit us enormously.

“Wake up Wakefield” we pay council tax for it to be used in our area, not in Wakefield where nothing is too much trouble or expensive to do.

Why not get rid of or cut the salaries of the bosses or people who make these ludicrous decision, even cut their expenses down.

What about our children? Do they not deserve the opportunity to learn mto swim and to continue swimming (not just at school but in their

leisure time).

Both of us use Pontefract Swimming Pool twice a week for a muscle mobility group as do our friends. Some even stay in for Zumba which we both know they thoroughly enjoy.

I also know various groups, especially the disabled, enjoy using these facilities. What are they supposed to do if these closures take place?

May I also point out that not everyone drives or even owns a car. Most people have to rely on public transport and Pontefract Swimming Pool is ideal as the bus station is close by.

The council proposes to build a new pool. This would not accommodate all of the people who use the existing three pools, especially when people using Knottingley Pool have to book in advance for the muscle mobility class.

Something needs to be done about this ludicrous idea. So come on people of Pontefract, Castleford and Knottingley do something about this, contact your local coucillor or the council direet and tell them to keep it open.
