Castleford dropped to the bottom of the Hunters ECB Yorkshire Premier League North after a 72-run defeat to Yorkshire Academy.
Both sides went into the match at Weetwood in search of a win to kick start their season, but it was the hosts who opened their account.
Tom Loten led the way for the county youngsters as he followed previous scores of 48 and 51 with a knock of 71. He and Harry Duke (51 not out) put on 68 for the sixth wicket either side of which wickets fell with Castleford’s spinners David Wainwright (2-32) and Eddie Morrison (3-55) combining to challenge their hosts who closed on 179-9.
Castleford struggled in reply, however, with skipper Wainwright top scorer with 21 and only three other batsmen making double figures – Rizwan Hussain (18), Connor Hyde (13) and Matthew Rees (12).
Joshua Sullivan (3-20) and Harry Sullivan (2-23) were the pick of the Yorkshire bowlers as Cas were all out for 107.
Despite bowling opponents Bishopthorpe out for 68, Castleford seconds lost their Hunters York League Division Three Ebor game.
Good bowling from Matthew Clegg (4-18), George Gibson (3-8), Jack Young (2-20) and James Clarke (1-16) appeared to have Castleford well in control.
But their batsmen also found it a struggle and Cas were all out for 62 to fall six runs short with Harry Wilkinson (22) and Clegg (11) the only double figure scorers.
