Castleford CC lost out in a close Yorkshire Premier League North game against Hull despite a battling unbeaten half century by James Sykes and a five-wicket haul from David Wainwright.

With only one league win all season, Castleford looked in a good position to double their tally when they had their opponents 110-7 chasing a 157 target, but Hull got home with just one wicket to spare in an exciting finish.

Ross Davy’s unbeaten 31 steered the visitors home and he top scored as the rest of the batsmen found it tricky going against the Cas attack.

Skipper Wainwright led the way with 5-25 from 16 overs of spin while Tom O’Connor took 2-36 and Liam Hyde chipped in with a wicket.

Castleford’s innings had seen wickets go down at regular intervals as they were all out for 156 in 46.3 overs.

Sykes top scored with 64 not out, including eight boundaries, with Mohammad Waqas hitting 19 and Liam Hyde 18.

Castleford seconds were on the wrong end of a draw against Dunnington II in the York League’s Ebor Division Three.

Dunnington went in first and declared three overs early, having piled up a big 256-5 score despite 3-56 from Oran White.

Castleford hit trouble in their reply, but batted out 48 overs to finish on 147-9. White followed up his bowling effort with a knock of 47 while Nathan Smith top scored with 48.

The losing draw left Castleford at the bottom of the table, 15 points adrift of Selby II.

A good all-round effort by Eddy Cole helped Castleford under 17s to a 21-run win over Pledwick in the Pontefract Junior League.

Skipper Cole made 16 runs with the bat and followed up with 2-10 from four overs as Castleford defended their 114-6 total.

Oran White top scored with 24 not out while David Tomlinson hit 17 and Luke Edwards 13.

Pledwick only lost three wickets in their reply, with two falling to Cole and one to George Swaby (1-11), but they fell behind the asking rate and ended their 20 overs at 93-3.
