Castleford CC off to a flyer as openers pave way for victory

Castleford CC made a flying start to the new season in the Yorkshire Premier League North as they piled up a big score on the way to a 76-run victory over Harrogate.

The batsmen paved the way for the encouraging win with openers Liam Hyde and Chesney Hughes setting the tone in an 138-run first wicket stand.

Hyde hit nine fours and three sixes in a 62-ball knock of 74 while Hughes struck nine fours and a six as he made 94.

With skipper David Wainwright (43) and Connor Hyde (31) also weighing with useful runs Castleford posted a 317-9 total.

Harrogate were kept to 241-8 with Jack Young the star bowler as he took 6-77.

Castleford seconds went down by eight wickets to Yapham in their first game since promotion to Y&DSCL Division Two Ebor.

Batting first, Castleford were restricted to 108-5 in their 45 overs with opener Luke Edwards hitting 43 and Gopi Chemudupati 27.

George Gibson took 2-34, but could not prevent Yapham reaching their victory target in 17 overs.
