Methley out of Heavy Woollen Cup despite Akhlaq heroics

Last year’s finalists Hoylandswaine inflicted the first defeat of the season on Methley in the second round of the Heavy Woollen Cup.

Methley lost by four wickets after they were bowled out for 163 despite a tremendous effort from overseas star Muhammad Akhlaq who batted throughout only to run out of partners when he was on 96 not out.

Hoylandswaine were able to chase down the runs with 15-year-old Harry Sullivan the pick of the Methley bowlers, with three wickets.

Townville made it through to the third round when they eased to a nine-wicket success against Crossbank.

A strong effort in the field paved the way as Crossbank were dismissed for 125 with Jack Hughes taking 3-23 and Richie Bresnan 3-13.

Townville raced to their target for the loss of only one wicket with Conor Harvey top scoring with 63 not out.

Townville Seconds also won through to the second round of the Crowther Cup when they beat Cawthorne by five runs in a thriller. Kieran Samuels (47) and Ian Jones (42) top scored as Townville made 220 while Luke Jacques took 5-39 as Cawthorne were all out for 215.

Great Preston Seconds were all out for 110 to lose their tie by 97 runs to Wrenthorpe.

Methley Seconds were given a bye through to the second round.
