Waqas century in vain for strugglers Castleford

Castleford are propping up the table.

A century by overseas signing Mohammad Waqas was in vain as Castleford slipped deeper into relegation trouble in Yorkshire Premier League North.

Castleford’s six-wicket defeat at second-placed York leaves them propping up the table and only a dramatic change of fortune is now likely to save them from the drop.

Waqas produced his best batting performance to date, hitting six sixes and 10 fours in a sparkling 107 off 118 balls as Castleford recovered from 16-2 to reach 209-9.

Skipper David Wainwright (28), Liam Hyde (25) and Tom O’Connor (17) were the only other batsmen in double figures as the rest of Castleford’s line-up succumbed.

There were wickets for each of the six bowlers used by York.

In reply, an opening stand of 159 between Joe Ashdown (80) and Duncan Snell (82), who became the league’s leading run scorer in the process, steered York to victory in 45.1 overs.

Liam Hyde was Castleford’s most successful bowler with 3-42 from 9.1 overs.

Eddie Morrison (1-37) was Castleford’s other wicket-taker.

Castleford host Woodhouse Grange on Saturday.
