FIVE Towns Quiz League Division One champions Wanderers have completed a league and cup double for the fifth time in ten seasons.
They beat Flanagan’s Army 79-77 in the Knock-out Cup final at Pontefract’s Olde Tavern.
Wanderers, who are based at George V WMC, Glasshoughton, won a thrilling match that was nip and tuck all the way against against year’s cup winners Flanagan’s.
Wanderers were narrowly ahead most of the time but they trailed 38-37 at half-time after losing the written round.
Their victory earned them the Harry Beevers Trophy, named after one of the league’s co-founders who passed away last year.
In the Plate Knockout final, RAFA Vulcan pulled off a fine win to defeat Division Two champions Crofton WMC 72-64.
RAFA Vulcan were never behind in the match, leading from round two right to the end. At one point, they had a 14 point lead but Crofton pulled this back slightly towards the end.
Trophies were presented to the major honours winners. A raffle was held which raised £66 for league funds and finals night programme sales raised £30.
The members’ draw was won by Leading Ladies who won a free season’s league fees. The Spirit of the Game Trophy, which is voted for by all qualified players from the current season, was won by Debby Aspland of Leading Ladies, who are based at Pontefract’s Olde Tavern.
