Barrett on target as Welfare show steel

A Glasshoughton Welfare side still below full strength showed plenty of steel against the ‘steelmen’ as they came away with a well deserved share of the spoils in a 1-1 draw at Parkgate in the Toolstation NCE Premier League.

On a perfect track shared for training by Rotherham United the hosts made the early running and Welfare’s defence had to be alert to snuff out the pacy Morley and Whittington.

From a long throw headed on by Fletcher, Whittington headed narrowly over and Parkgate forced a number of corners before the visitors eventually settled and in turn began to give an account of themselves through Daniel Barrett and Josh Prudhoe.

A missed tackle allowed Parkgate’s Daniel Abdulla to close in on Josh Archer’s goal but the striker’s effort was sliced wide. Welfare glimpsed a chance when home keeper Daniel Morton spilled a low free-kick, but he recovered.

There was little to separate the teams, but Adam Walsh had the misfortune to turn a header into his own net to give the home men the advantage at the break.

Welfare came out of the blocks looking determined to reduce the deficit in the second half and did so in grand style. Substitute Josh Morley, having replaced Reece Chappell at the break, glanced a header into the path of Barrett who hit a sweet low shot past Morton.

From this the visitors came more into the game and it became end to end with Josh Prudhoe having an effort blocked on the goal-line and at the other end Whittington heading a clear chance wide.

In the closing moments Blaine Kellett brought off a timely last ditch tackle to deny Fletcher and see Welfare to the draw they so richly deserved
