The six foot, five centre-half has rejoined the Westfield Lane club after a recent spell at Stafford Rangers and has instantly been appointed captain for next season.

Burns has also played for Cambridge United, Buxton, Gateshead and Nuneaton, but is excited to be back at Frickley where he played in the team that were so unlucky to miss out on promotion in 2018, playing in their losing play-off semi-final side against Stamford.

"I felt that with the team we had and how we were performing we should have got promotion and have no idea how we didn’t manage to win that game against Stamford," he said.

"There were some poor decisions in that game as well. However I’m confident we’ll be able to go one better this season."

On his new role as captain at Frickley, he explained: "I would probably say I will be modelling my style on John Terry as I have looked up to him since the age of six.

"I reckon it will be a blend of both, with me giving motivation to the team and individuals. However, if someone isn’t pulling their weight or slacking then they will know about it."

Burns is looking forward to playing for manager Dave Frecklington.

He added: "We had a good chat about what we both wanted from the forthcoming season and we agreed on pretty much everything - and when the opportunity came for me to be captain of the club it was an easy decision to make.

"I think the whole squad's hopes for the season, not just mine, is to gain promotion by any means necessary and I’m confident that we can achieve that goal.

"For myself I would like to lead the squad to as many wins and good results as possible and help the defence to get as many clean sheets as we can. Maybe pop up with a goal every now and then wouldn’t be bad either."
