After an impressive first season in the Everton first team that finished in fifth place in the Premier League, 19-year-old defender Stones has been tipped for big honours and will go to the World Cup in Brazil if any of the four central defenders named today in Roy Hodgson’s squad picks up an injury before the tournament.

Stones’ versatility has alerted his talents to Hodgson as the former Barnsley player can also play right-back as well as his preferred position at centre-half.

Stones, an England under 21 regular, joined Everton 12 months ago in a £3 million move from Barnsley, signing a five-and-a-half year contract with the Premiership outfit.

He has made 26 appearances in an impressive season at the heart of Everton’s defence and had earned the praise of his manager, Roberto Martinez.

He also has the backing of former England star turned BBC pundit Gary Lineker, who said: “The one I might take a chance on because we are short in central defence is Stones.

“I really like him and he has got a lot about him.”
