Pontefract Collieries maintained their title challenge last Saturday when they had their Toolstation NCE Premier League game at Liversedge effectively won by half-time.
The hosts came back at them late on and threatened to snatch an unlikely point, but Eli Hey’s second of the game and 20th goal of the season four minutes from time settled any nerves in the Colls camp, completing a 4-2 success.
It was Kane Reece who was initially the star of the show as he fired Ponte ahead after only seven minutes against their mid-table opponents who on their day can be a dangerous side as they showed when knocking top six side Hemsworth MW out of the FA Vase.
Reece doubled the lead on 26 minutes, taking his tally of goals up to 14 for the season, before centre-forward Hey got in on the scoring seven minutes later.
It stayed 3-0 with Colls coasting to victory until out of the blue Joseph Walton pulled a goal back for the home team 15 minutes from time.
When he quickly netted again it was game on, but Hey’s second ensured there would be no shock turnaround.
Ponte were hoping to go back to the top on Tuesday night, but their scheduled game at Hall Road Rangers was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch. The match has now been rearranged for Tuesday, January 30.
Pontefract now face another test of their title credentials when they host sixth-placed Maltby Main this Saturday (3pm). Their busy period continues as they are also in action away to Albion Sports in a second round League Cup tie next Wednesday (7.45pm).
They go into the games on a run of five straight victories in all competitions.
