Glasshoughton Welfare suffered only their third defeat of the season in Division One of the Toolstation NCE League when they went down 2-0 at promotion chasing Winterton Rangers.

Up against opponents in third, injury-hit Welfare battled hard, but lost out to two second half goals.

The first half saw Winterton hit the post in the first minute, but they rarely looked like breaking down Welfare’s defence.

They did take the lead after the break as keeper Dan Waring saved at the feet of a forward and the home player appeared to prevent him getting to his feet as the loose ball was hit home by Rhys Vazquez.

The scoring was completed in the 90th minute by Jamie Richardson.

Glasshoughton face another tough looking game this Saturday at home to sixth-placed Hallam (3pm). They are also in action at home next Tuesday when the visitors are Brigg Town.

Welfare have added a player to their squad and lost a player in the last week.

Winger Richard Collier has joined neighbours Hemsworth MW, but Glasshoughton are pleased to have an old boy back with Josh Morley returning.

Morley, who can play at left-back or midfield, was a popular member of the side last season, winning the committee’s player of the year and players’ player of the year. At the beginning of this season he initially joined Harrogate Railway before signing for near rivals Selby Town. Unable to gain a regular place in the North Yorkshire side, he has now returned to Glasshoughton.
