In a game that was much more balanced than the final score suggested Glasshoughton Welfare inexplicably capitulated in the closing quarter to lose 4-1 at home to Pickering Town in the Toolstation NCE Premier League.

Within minutes of the start Welfare should have gone ahead when Aaron Horton went one-on-one with visiting keeper Toby Wells, but the home striker failed on two occasions to beat the keeper.

After 20 minutes of a fast game Welfare were made to rue the misses when from a corner kick Joe Danby got the finest of glances to head Town into the lead.

From this the visitors were on top with Robbie Hawkes skimming the crossbar, but Welfare replied in positive fashion to pull level, Adam Walsh heading in from a corner kick with the aid of the underside of the woodwork and a positive decision from a well placed assistant referee on the half hour mark.

Welfare were comfortably matching their high flying visitors until the loss of possession in midfield saw Town build a slick move which was ended by Ryan Cooper rifling home from the edge of the area to take Pickering in at the interval with the narrowest of leads.

From the interval restart Welfare again had early chances to level, firstly being denied by a last-gasp challenge from Town’s Wayne Aziz and from the resulting corner Liam Kellett failing to convert and then Josh Prudhoe hitting a long sizzling shot just wide.

The game remained even and Welfare were looking good for a share of the spoils, but the visitors took two late opportunities to seal the points.

First, Billy Logan was allowed to poke home a corner kick in the 85th minute and then in the last minute substitute Andy Simpson weaved past defenders to place past home keeper Josh Archer to make a mockery of the scoreline in what had been for the most a tight game

Welfare: Archer, Dawley, Morley, Walsh, Dyson (Ndlovu), Leach, Horton, Mottley-Henry (Anderson), Prudhoe, Weatherald, L Kellett.

This Saturday Welfare are looking for a change of fortune when they travel to play Athersley Recs (3pm) and they are also in action next Tuesday at home to Barton Town OB (7.45pm).
