After the Whites came close to signing Kieran Agard from Rotherham United last week speculation was mounting that Smith would be on his way, especially with only one year left to run on his contract and Millwall showing an interest.

But Millwall’s advances were snubbed and Smith has now committed his future to Leeds.

He said: “I’m very happy and I’m delighted that it has happened.

“It is a huge honour and a privilege for me to represent the football club. To extend my future here is brilliant and I’m over the moon.

“I’m just happy that the club have got me in their plans for the future and the three year deal is a show of intent. From what I did last year I’m happy that it has come to fruition.”

Smith is now at the start of his second season at Leeds after a successful first campaign in which he scored 12 goals after arriving on a free transfer from Oldham Athletic.
