Pontefract Collieries’ FA Vase adventure did not last long as they were surprisingly knocked out at the first qualifying round stage by NCE Division One side Rossington Main.

Newly promoted Premier team Colls led early on, but were 2-1 down by half-time and went on to lose 4-2.

Aaron Moxam gave Ponte a great start with a ninth minute opener only for Rossington to equalise through Ben Hunter seven minutes later.

Crucially Lee Holmes made it 2-1 to the hosts just before the break and they stretched their lead in the second half through Hunter again before Jason Stokes made sure of the win in the 85th minute.

Liam Radford netted Ponte’s second in the 90th minute, but it was just a consolation.

Collieries earned a point in midweek when they drew 2-2 at Parkgate in the Toolstation NCE Premier.

New signings Max Leonard and Jack Mawson made their debut and the former made a quick impression with an eighth minute effort saved by Ben Brunt. The ball dropped to Radford and he gave Colls the lead from the rebound.

Parkgate turned the game round with two goals in six minutes from Sam Foulds, but Colls kept going and were rewarded with an equaliser by Moxam on 63 minutes.

Ponte are back in league action at Brigg Town tonight before they visit Rainworth MW on Saturday (3pm) and are away to Tadcaster Albion next Tuesday (7.45pm).
