Party poopers AFC Mansfield denied Pontefract Collieries a winning finish to their successful season on Saturday when they went away with a 4-2 victory.
Colls were understandably in celebratory mood after clinching promotion to the Premier Division of the Toolstation NCE League the previous week, but missed out on the first division title after losing their last game while rivals Clipstone won 1-0 at Winterton Rangers.
The results meant that Ponte will finish in runners-up position with 91 points from their 42 matches.
They were never ahead against Mansfield after Mark Ward put the visitors ahead on 33 minutes.
Dean Rick doubled Mansfield’s advantage in the second half before Nigel Danby’s goal just past the hour mark briefly raised hopes of a Ponte win.
But within three minutes Ryan Williams had scored again for the visitors and 12 minutes from time Craig Mitchell made it 4-1.
Fittingly Colls had the final word, however, when Matthew Marsden, who has weighed in with some important goals over the season, netted. It was too late to bring them a point on this occasion, but the Pontefract club could look back on a great campaign when they have ended their 15-year wait to play Premier football again.
