A GROUP of men who call themselves the Pontefract Cosmos have entered Football Mundial’s Six-a-side League in Pontefract for a 25th consecutive season.
The team has entered every single season since 2000 and are now in their 12th year together as a team, playing two or three seasons per calendar year.
Manager Rodney Roper said “It has been a long time since we were pushing for honours, but in the spirit of the game we make sure we have a full team of six every week, come rain or shine”
In fact, the Cosmos have only missed four games in 16 years. While they have kept the same nucleus of four or five players together for many years there have been times when younger blood has had to come in to help out.
In general, though, the team has stuck together through thick and thin. The memories of winning league titles are distant, but this does not deter the ‘mighty Cosmos’ who just want to turn up and play a game of football.
Goalkeeper Peter, who is over 50, said: “When the lads were younger and fitter I didn’t really have much to do, but now they are older, greyer and a few knee replacements later, they just can’t get around the park anymore. Consequently I’m busier than ever.”
Team member Ross added: “Now we are in our 13th year we are hoping that our luck will change for the better and not worse in terms of goals scored.”
Over the years they must have played over 500 games together against a variety of opposition and they would strongly encourage more teams to enter this friendly league.
Roper, who looks like a battle hardened pro, added: “This league has suited us for many years. It is well organised with FA refs, and it is not too serious. Whilst we are still mobile we will try to continue to play for the foreseeable future. We may even get close to 1,000 games together.”
