PONTEFRACT NEW College athlete Lucy Holmes (pictured) produced a personal best as she achieved national shot putt success at the English Schools’ Track and Field Championships at Gateshead.
An impressive putt of 12.51m – a personal best by as much as 34cm – won Lucy a gold medal in the last year she is eligible for this championship.
In the past Lucy has competed in the national schools event in the 200m and long jump as well as shot putt, but it is in the latter that she has recently specialised and is now ranked fifth in England, Scotland and Wales.
In January she gained a bronze medal at the North Of England Indoor Championships at Sheffield and won a silver, after being in hospital for three days, at the Yorkshire Championships in May.
More success followed with a silver medal at the North of England Outdoor Championships at Sports City, Manchester. A week before the English Schools’, Lucy was fifth at the AAA England Championships and European Trials at Bedford – and was the third British athlete as there were two New Zealanders also competing – throwing a then PB of 12.17m.
Lucy is a member of Wakefield Harriers, who competes in three different Leagues for them.
